There once was a turkey named Wendell. He was so worried, you see Thanksgiving was coming. And well, for those of you not in the know, turkeys are the main entree for Thanksgiving. (Most of the time, unless you're a vegetarian.) He was fretting about what to do. Should he hide? But where? And for how long? Wendell was thinking about this and sitting by a log in the forest. It seemed a safe place, as long as he kept his feathers down. "Oh I wish... I wish..." But he didn't know what to wish for. Then it came to him, he should wish to be anything but a turkey. That would work! "Oh I wish... I wish... I wish I were ANYTHING but a turkey!"
Wendell's hopes rose so high! Maybe he would be safe for Thanksgiving! "Well, you see Plucky, I want to stay alive. I'm tired of worrying about being the main course. I wish to be anything but a turkey. Please help me." The fairy agreed, Wendell was a nice turkey. He hadn't ever asked for anything, so why not? Besides maybe this would put Plucky in the running for Fairy Of The Year. That would ensure the word got out about there being a Turkey Fairy. And she'd finally get some respect. Maybe fairies like Harold (the Tooth Fairy) would stop teasing her. Umm, it was her job too, to help the turkeys. Let's hope Plucky didn't forget that. Plucky checked her fairy manual; she was still so new she didn't have it memorized. Plucky could turn Wendell into something else. But, the manual said it had to be another food. You see, the Turkey Fairy is limited to all things edible. "How about Pumpkin Pie?" "What then?" quizzed Plucky. Wendell didn't know, he had only started thinking about this. *poof* There went Wendell again. This time into yeast rolls. "Ok, Wendell... how about stuffing?" This time Plucky's wand was beside her on the ground. (Aren't we glad for that!) Wendell shook his head no, his waddle flapping furiously. "Mashed Potatoes?" No.... "Yams?" No.... "Gravy?" No! Wendell explained to Plucky that any food for Thanksgiving was just as bad as staying a turkey. "Oh, I see. Silly me." After much discussion, and thankfully no more wand waving, they decided on the perfect thing for Wendell to become! It was brilliant, Plucky was amazed she thought of it. (Or at least that's what she planned on telling the other fairies.) To ensure that Wendell would be happy and have a long life, they decided he should become the one food that lived on forever... fruitcake! © Copyright Stumbeline - November 17, 2001.
